LEX LAFOY BRINGS YOU 22

LEX LAFOY FLEXES ONCE AGAIN

22 is the fifth recorded release by Durban-born rapper Lex LaFoy. The EP boasts four songs produced by Congolese/Joburg producer and artist Marco Benz with two remixes by guest producer Durban’s Dave Audinary.

Flexing her versatility and range, Lex LaFoy enters a new sound on 22. Dabbling in trap, RnB soul and afrobeat she explores themes like
sexuality, love and desire. Eastern Cape/Durban rapper Otarel features on the playful Dolphins which opens with a sample from African legendary spiritualist
and healer Credo Mutwa, while Lord Script of Dope Artists features on the sultry RnB Soul.

When asked about the title of the EP Lex explains:
"I'm born on the 22nd of May. Marco's born on the 22nd of November, and I've always wanted to name a project of mine 22. 22 is a power number, and symbolizes the manifestation of dreams. Having often written from a non-gendered space before, in this project I openly explore my vulnerability and femininity reclaiming them as forms of strength and power”.

Released on the 4th of May 2019, stream or purchase 22 online now:

-->

2.  What peeked your interest towards being a make-up artist?

When I started working in the beauty industry, I fell in-love with makeup & that is when i realized that I want to do this as a career.

3.  Tell us more about your typical day

Well I work on my own and I have my studio in my apartment, so mostly I wake up, do errands around the house, and its either I am doing a shoot with my models or I am out looking for new makeup products because cosmetic companies are always releasing something new. So, on a typical day, I am either working with my models, checking out new makeup products or I am traveling for work.

4.  Can you tell us more about your company?

NoxxBeautyStudio is my company (an umbrella) & NoxxMakeupArtist is a leg, it offers professional makeup services & personalized makeup lessons. I have a mini makeup studio & in the long run I'll have stores nationwide.

5.  What is the best part of your work?

The best part about my work is that every day I wake up and do what I love, that feeling is so fulfilling, that is the best part because I do not drag myself to work, I love what I do; also traveling, when I was a child I never got to travel, but now I have all the chance in the world to see other places, but mostly, I do what I love every single day.

6.  How/where do you see yourself/your work in the next 3/5 years from now?

In the next 5 years I see myself as a successful business woman, I see my company growing to a point that I have beauty studios in different parts of the country. Being a successful motivational speaker. I also see myself on the cover of Forbes magazine, I see myself with my first book, traveling the world and promoting my book, meeting other inspirational and successful women. I see myself rich at heart and rich financially.

7.  What are the challenges that you have faced when starting up?

I was so scared starting this business, I wanted to start it in 2013 but only started it in 2015, traveling was a mission because I did not have a car, I was using taxis with my kit, sleeping over at my clients, I would come back really drained and the only thing that kept me going was my goal and dream, and seeing myself where I am now. The pricing, traveling and sometimes clients would give me problems, but the fact that I was doing what I love made it so much easier.

8.  Is traveling to clients easier than setting up a physical shop?

Either or, because if you set up a shop, you save a lot on travel cost and if you travel to client you charge for travel expenses.

9.  What marketing tools do you utilize?

Social media; we are so fortunate to be living in an era where social media is so huge, so mostly I use Instagram and twitter.

10. Who is your inspiration/role models?

I find inspiration everywhere, from everyone, who is focused, who is a go getter, who is not afraid to try, who is not afraid to fail when they try and who is not afraid to be comfortable at being uncomfortable.
.
11. What is your favorite holiday spot/food/gadget?

I love Sea food, I love uphuthu nobhontshisi, jeqe and tripe. Fav holiday destination is Cape Town.

12. What are your favorite childhood memories?

Going to church with my grandmother, it was not rosy but I was so happy. Even today the only place that calms me down is back home Enqoleni.

13. If you were a cartoon character, which character would you be?

I do not watch cartoons hahaha.

14. What has been your biggest career highlight?

A lot of things have happened but being an award-winning makeup artist just after I had started my business was a big thing for me, till today I still appreciate that moment, I am so grateful.

15. What advice would you give to up and coming make-up artists?

Don’t look at someone else or other people and what they are doing, focus on you and your ideas. If someone comes and competes with you, do not mind them just focus on where you are going. If you see someone do what you wanted to do as part of your goals, carry on with it, it doesn’t matter, what matters is that you need to reach your goals.

16. What colour is your toothbrush?

My toothbrush is pink.

17. Messy or neat freak?

I am a neat freak.

18. Which shoe do you wear first when dressing up, left or right?

I wear the right shoe.

19. What is your most embarrassing moment?

Nothing comes to mind.

20. If this is our last ever conversation, what words of wisdom would you leave me with?

Stay persistent, stay hungry, keep on working because one day it will all pay off, and you will look back and think of all the hard work that yo have done and it will be all worth it.

FEATURING PRIMUS LAIDEE

Who is Primus Laidee?

Primus Laidee is an extension of me. All the things I wish I could say or be without having to bite my tongue or suppress my feelings. When Bongiwe grows, Primus Laidee also evolves.

How did you get into music?

I got into music through poetry. From a very young age I started writing poetry and looked up to the likes of Kriss Kross and LL Cool J. It wasn’t until I was 16 years old when I decided to turn one of my poems into a song during Biology class that poetry and music came together for me. In fact I think it only occurred to me after that RAP was actually an acronym for rhythm and poetry.

Tell us more about your typical day.

My typical day involves me having a cup of green tea in the morning, checking my emails, doing some admin then tackling whatever the day has in store for me. Most of my creativity happens at night though. During the day, I deal with the formalities of life: unless I’m in studio.

What do you do when you are not doing what you regularly do?

I own and run a catering company called Primal Instinct Foods, so that also takes up some of my days. I’m also a serious DIY junkie. Whether it’s making my own yoghurt, soap, jewellery, bags, gardening, etc. I love pushing the limits of what I can do with my hands. Plus I love natural and organic products.

Tell us about the best part of your work

The best part about my work is not being bound to one specific activity. There’s a lot of flexibility and freedom that comes with being an artist or being self-employed. It does take something special to tackle that much freedom though; you need a lot of discipline. It can be scary. If you don’t know how to fill your time with useful and meaningful activities, you’ll feel very vulnerable and unstable.

How/where do you see yourself/your work in the next 3/5 years from now?

I don’t like to set a time for my goals and aspirations. I believe where we are in this moment is where we should be. Progress is gradual and varying. Depending on how badly I want or work at something, it could happen tomorrow or in 3 years. Also, I believe we don’t necessarily get what we want in life, we get what we need. I just focus on my passion and work hard to be better than yesterday. Setting time can make one too comfortable and a little complacent over time.

What are the challenges faced by female artists in the
 music industry?

As if it’s not bad enough that we have to compete in unequal standards against men, we also compete amongst ourselves. Females act like there’s only one spot for a female in the industry. Everyone wants to be and believes that they are the best but there’s plenty of room to share. Also, women are often not taken seriously, especially in hip-hop. You’re often met with chauvinistic behaviour. So you either fight for acceptance, sexualize yourself, or find a balance that works.

What is the colour of your morning slippers?

Black.

Which artist have you enjoyed working with most?

Honestly, I make the most of collaborations I do. I love working with anyone I work with cause each artist teaches me something different about myself.

Who is your inspiration/role model?

I don’t have one specific role model. I draw inspiration from many people and places for different reasons and different time periods.

What is your favorite holiday spot/food/gadget?

Holiday Spot: Garden Route.

Food: I’m such a foodie. I would feel like I’m cheating on all my other
favorite foods if I chose one. The only food I’m not too crazy about is Asian food: with the exception of Chow Mein and Chow Faan.

Gadget: My phone.

What movie best describes you?

Queen Of The Damned.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

Hanging out with my cousins during the holidays. We would play games, play pranks on each other, go on excursions, laugh, fight, eat together… it was crazy and fun. I’m such a child at heart.

If you were a cartoon character, which character would you be?

Kim Possible or Nazz Van Bartonschmeer from Ed, Edd and Eddy.

Are you a night owl or morning person?

Definitely a night owl.

Are you messy or a neat freak?

I’m in the middle but definitely more of a neat freak. For instance, if my bed isn’t done, at least the rest of my room needs to look decent. Clutter makes me feel uneasy and kind of claustrophobic.

Play or Monster?

None, if I can help it. I’m not a fan of synthetic energy.

McDonalds or KFC?

McDonald’s. Hands down. I love that cardboard food.

If you could throw a parade in the president’s office,
what would it be?

A charity parade where people donate groceries to give to as much families as possible. Ideally, I would like to provide each needy family with at least three months’ worth of groceries. Having food is so important and everyone
deserves that.

Do you have any allergies?

I have photosensitivity, which is a sun allergy. I also have chronic allergic rhinitis, which is triggered mostly by pollen, dust and animal dander.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

When I was 8 years old, I chipped my tooth real bad during break time at school. I was mortified. We had assembly afterwards and I didn’t speak until my mother came to pick me up from school.

If this is our last ever conversation, what words of wisdom would you leave
me with?

The people who are the closest to you can hurt you the most, and they know it. Therefore, never feel guilty for not being able to readily forgive or give a pass to those people. If you meant as much to them as they mean to you, they would’ve known better than to screw you over.

Featuring Nokulunga “Dunamis” Maqubela

Who is Nokulunga “Dunamis” Maqubela?

Exactly that, Nokulunga ‘Dunamis’ Maqubela. I cannot be defined. One person may know a complete different version of me than the next person. We live and grow every day, we rediscover ourselves through different situations we go through. So therefore, I am a human, BEING whatever I want to be.

What/Who sparked your interest in Hip Hop?

My late brother Simphiwe aka ‘Charlie’ was a huge Hip-Hop head; dancer, rapper and all that, he represented the culture through his being; the way he dressed, spoke, the way he walked. I spent a lot of time with him, we were very close. We would freestyle, spend hours chilling, listening to RAP music, talking about RAP music. So he literally mirrored his habits on to me, I even walked like him, haha. So yeah, Charlie started this whole thing and left me with its Greatness. I still fall deeper into it each and every day through sharing with friends, and by just discovering on the internet.

What is your role in SAHipHopHeadz?

Well besides being the pretty one. I am an In-House Writer at SAHIPHOPHEADZ.

How did it all start?

It all started when a certain company decided to bring an international artist to headline their event; now this being something I had always complained about, like, why are they bringing these people here and sending money overseas while we have 1,2,3 artists who can do what these ones are doing, or even better. Why do we not give our people the same treatment we give to the international artists? When are we going to start celebrating our own? These were the questions that would always come to my mind. And so I thought to myself, you know what, instead of complaining about this, let me write about it, by this “Invest In Africa” came to life. After writing it, I sent it to a friend of mine who does album reviews for SAHIPHOPHEADZ, he said it was a great piece, and they would publish it, they did. Couple of months later, I met Lefoko (founder of SAHIPHOPHEADZ) at a conference. Fast forward, he sent me a DM on twitter (it goes down in the DM) asking if I could be a part of the Magazine, and as they say, the rest is Her-Story.

Tell us about the best part of what you do

Doing what I do is the best part of what I do. Like, when I get that intro, and I feel like “Oh snap! I just killed that”, or when I do interviews, the knowledge and wisdom bestowed in our people is beyond words. I just LOVE music/Hip-Hop, and having the opportunity to be able to work or contribute towards it, is just amazing, it excites me.

How/where do you see yourself/your work in the next 3/5 years from now?

I am not today where I wanted to be five years ago. I thought I’d have a degree in Actuarial Sciences by now, but life had other plans for me. Funny thing though, when I sit and think about it, I am doing something that is aligned to what I have always loved. So I just let life unfold itself, and trust for things to work out. The main goal is absolute contentment in everything I do.

How has the Hip Hop industry evolved since the days of the likes of
Amu, Landmynz and all?

Canibus once said, “There’s a misconception that movement in any direction is progression even though the potency of it lessens”. This, when it comes to Hip-Hop couldn’t be too far from the truth. Hip-Hop in those days was about getting people to e.i think differently, critically or creatively. The lyrics had an impact on a person’s life. The so called “evolution” isn’t much of forward change but crippling the purpose of what art Hip-Hop was. Now any kid from the basement with a dope beat thinks he’s Hip-Hop if he can make people dance. What happened to Rap? The art is no longer part of it. But this is what is on the TV and radio. There’s good Rap music out here, you just have to look for it.

What advice would you give to up and coming artists?

· Invest in yourself and in your craft.

· Don’t wait for someone to put you on, go knock on those doors, if they say no,
check yourself, and go back the following day.

· Do not seek validation from people, not everybody will like you, do your best and
the rest will follow.

·      · Research, learn about your field, study those who have made it and seek advice from them.

· MASTER YOUR CRAFT.

What song best describes you?

This is such a difficult question. I listen to so much music, my mind is a music library.
Do I have to choose one? It has to be ‘Soul In Mind’ by Lira, and
‘I Hope You Dance’ by Lee Ann Womack.

Who is your inspiration/role model?

I draw inspiration from myself. There’s a line in a song that goes, “inspiration comes from within”. See, no matter how much you may look up to or aspire to be like someone, unless you get that push from within, that acceleration in your inner engine, you will not get there, or you will, but there will be less contentment.

What is your favorite holiday spot/food/gadget?

Take me to Santorini right now, haha, I would really like to go to Santorini (an Island in Greece), it just looks so peaceful and refreshing, the water, the white sands… I don’t really have a favorite type of food, but give me pap any day, I will devour it, in IsiNdebele we call it ‘Umratha’… Gadgets; hmm I am not a gadget person, I’ve never even owned a selfie-stick, but I would like to own a Boombox, the ones created by Tshepo Sedumo, pretty cool.

What side of the bed do you sleep on?

The side closest to the plugging socket.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

New Years’ Eve at Grandmas place every year, those were the best times.

What is your favorite book?

Mastery by Robert Greene

Are you a night owl or morning person?

Both; but mostly a night owl. My grandmother believes I have a problem and I should see someone about it. I hardly sleep, hence my height, apparently, hahaha.

Are you messy or a neat freak?

I am neat, not a freak though.

What color is your toothbrush?

Yellow, euw!!! I need to get a new toothbrush next week, one that’s not yellow.

Are you a good driver?

When I buy a car, I’ll take you for a ride.

If you were to time travel, what period in time would you go to and why?

The Golden Era; the Hip-Hop music that was made then is just out of this world man; the diversity, quality, innovation, the influence… Yes we can access this music through different libraries, but I feel the energy is not the same. I just wish I was a little bit older then, you know!

If you could throw a parade in the president’s office, what would it be?

Our President has so much problems already. I’ll sit this one out.

Do you have any allergies?

Never tell people your allergies. That is how they kill you.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Geez; hahaha, okay. Back in primary, this was in grade 4, on a VERY HOT day, all the grade 4s had had the two last periods off, so the teachers thought it best that we all sit by the benches at the rugby field, these were four classes. One student did something (I don’t really remember what it was), it wasn’t good though, which had the two teachers who were on guard pretty angry. While reprimanding that student, someone behind me laughed, my BROTHER told the teachers it was me. They made me stand in the middle of the rugby field with my schoolbag held up high for TWO WHOLE PERIODS.

If this is our last ever conversation, what words of wisdom would you leave me with?

Don’t panic, trust for things to work out. Learn to stand on your own. Respect the individual, you do not have to like everything and everyone but that does not mean you should assassinate what you do not understand. Value learning above everything else, wisdom does not come overnight. Have a sound mind, spend time with yourself, know and master yourself. There is no greater mastery than the mastery of oneself.

Featuring Roni Marsalis

Who is Roni Marsalis?

Roni Marsalis is the HipHopAngel

How did you get into Poetry?

I have always written poems as therapy, but it wasn’t until my Freshman year of College that I wrote my first spoken word poem and decided that I wanted to continue to use poetry as an outlet and perform in front of people.

Tell us more about your typical day.

My typical day consists of reading, being of service to others, brainstorming ideas for my career, finding solutions to make everyday better and easier than the last, writing music, running and getting exercise wether it be yoga, meditation, or intense endurance training, and keeping myself informed with what is going on around me so I can know what ways I can help.

What do you do when you are not doing what you regularly do?

I’m lazy, listening to music, playing with my sister, going out to a movie, or just sitting and reflecting on who I am and what my accomplishments mean to me. I like to sit outside and reflect a lot

Tell us about the best part of your work.

The best part of my work is the passion, the connection has with its audience, and its purpose, the work that god gifted me with has a way of coming through me and touching the hearts of people.

How/where do you see yourself/your work in the next 3/5 years from now?

I see myself and my work on tour overseas, and having collaborations with many of my musical inspirations (i.e. Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, J. Cole, The Roots, Black ICE, Russell Simmons, Shinedown)

What are the challenges faced by independent female artists in the music industry?

The challenges vary woman to woman, but I’ll start by stating some of the challenges I have personally faced, which are internal challenges dealing with my self-esteem and confidently negotiating what I want with some of the men/women who I seek support from and not getting it because they may view me as immature in business and/or inferior their brand. Or working with artist who disrespect my movement because they don’t see a huge label behind me, but I think everyone has to face those challenges they just come in different forms.

What advise would you give to up and coming female artists?

Stay true to what you represent, do not compromise your vision for anyone, don’t be afraid to say no to people or things that go against your vision, and most importantly don’t compete with other women. KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Which artist have you enjoyed working with most?

Honestly, I would have to say working with actual instrumentalist has been most enjoyable to me. Anytime I am working with a band I enjoy it. Oh…and dancers I love working with dancers.

Who is your inspiration/role model?

At this given moment my role model and inspiration is God. I have grown so much by seeking answers from the divine spirit.

What is your favorite holiday spot/food/gadget?

I really enjoy this vegan cafe, called Cafe Gratitude on thanksgiving they give free vegan dinners that day. My favorite food, I really like granola bars lol, & my favorite gadget is a calculator.

What side of the bed do you sleep on?

When I do sleep in a bed I like sleeping in the center all stretched out

What is your favorite childhood memory?

My favorite childhood memory would be when it was around Christmas time and I was at my cousins house, up the street they were having a raffle and giving away bicycles. BOOM. She won a bike & we crossed our fingers, prayed, and begged for me to win one too……& I did! It was amazing and we rode those bikes every time I came to visit.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is The Bodyguard

Are you a night owl or morning person?

I’m both, but I’m most creative I think during the night

Are you messy or a neat freak?

I like organization, I do not like mess. Mess makes it hard for me to think clearly

What color is your toothbrush?

Pink

Are you a good driver?

Yes. I could be a NASCAR racer if I wanted lol

McDonalds or KFC?

Ugh. Neither.

If you could throw a parade in the president’s office, what would it be?

I would have an African Tribal Parade, and call it Harambee Time

Do you have any allergies?

No

What is your most embarrassing moment?

For me my most embarrassing moment would definitely have too be when I had this huge celebrity crush on J Cole and I told the world that we would be together because we both rap lol & then to find out he was married -___-  the world laughed at me.

If this is our last ever conversation, what words of wisdom would you leave me with?

Live for moments, not for things.
